Label: Tapu Records Mastered : September 2016
The Macrocosms mastering:
After doing the master for their previous collaboration “Error Log” Michel Banabila and Rutger Zuydervelt asked if I would like to master do their latest effort.
This time 9 tracks were to be mastered.
I could stay in the normal stereo domain for most tracks. That’s stereo left right.
For 2 of the tracks some mid-side processing was needed to ensure mono compatibility and to adjust the ms balance. Those tracks were treated for ms before going back to normal stereo mastering.
The main workflow was like this: check every track for clicks and off balance frequencies and use the Sonnox declicker en Bx_dyneq v2 for those. I used eq automation where it sounded better than the automated Bx_dyneq. Something which varied per song.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The dyneq worked best for overal balancing in a track where I needed to adjust a certain frequency spectrum but wanted to keep it as natural as possible. The automated eq worked best when just a few frequencies on a small spot needed treatment.
Multiband compression was barely used on the seperate songs. Just on 2 songs some mid range compression was needed to bring out the mid range’s tail a bit.
Some tracks did not need seperate treatment a all, which is a sign of good mixing.
All tracks had a little bit of reverb added. Two instances, one for some low end and one for hi end reverb. These reverbs were added to give the music just a bit more of room or breath.
The Macrocosms masterbus chain:
All tracks were passed trough analogue D&R Stylyx eq. Mid range, low end and hi frequencies were added just a bit to enhance the overall sound. Back in the DAW, multiband compression on the hi frequencies helped smooth out some overall attackieness. A limiter was used to lift overall volume, while not limiting at all.
Overall loudness ended up to be -14.24Lufs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
