www.no1408.com/[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]After having recorded their debutalbum “Vuilwater” No1408 returned to the White Noise Studio to record their new single ”Razernij”.
Wanting to capture a more live feel then on “Vuilwater”, we opted to record all the instruments at the same time in our live room. To make sure the bleed of the guitars and bass into the drum mics represent the stereo image, we set up the instruments as they would be in the stereo mix. That ment: Jordy’s and Ilja’s guitars to the far right and far left of the drums, Coen’s bass amp directly in front of the bassdrum.
All vocals and guitar solo were recorded after the instrument recordings.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
Used instruments and mics:
The drums used are the studio’s 24″x 18″ Pearl CZX Maple Bassdrum. It was recorded with a Sennheiser MD421 inside the bassdrum pointed at the beater for attack and midrange and a Yamaha Subkick at the frontskin.
The toms were the studio’s Pearl Masterworks Maple toms, in sizes 12″ , 14″ and 15″. The 12 inch and 14 inch were recorded with Audio Technica AT3525 condenser, the floortom with a Rode NT1.
The snare was the studio’s Mapex Black Panther Brass 14″ snare, recorded with an AKG DM1000C on the top op the snare.
Frank brought his own Paiste cymbals, we recorded them with Neumann TLM 103’s as overheads. The hihat is recorded with a Shure SM58, the ride with a Rode NT5.
The guitars were recorded with 1 mic each. A sm57 for Jordy’s Marshall Mode Four amp and cabinet and a md421 for Ilja’s cabinet. The bass is recorded directly from the effect pedal out as DI and with a Sennheiser e602 in front of the amp.
The Razernij recording and mix:
As said before, the band recorded everything live except for the vocals and guitar solo.
With the guitar solo, Jordy felt he could do better and re-recorded the solo himself using the line out of his Marshall Mode Four amp. Since this sounds like a lineout of a preamp ( pun intended) I re-amped it with a Fender Champ combo and a Rode NT1 to capture the amp and speaker sound.
All vocals are recorded with the BPM CR76 tube mic.
The leadvocal is mixed using Waves’ vocal rider going into the D&R Stylyx console and going into the dbx compressor with a little eq. The Elysia Mpressor is used as final compressor and a little reverb and slapback delay were added to create depth and glue the leadvocal into the mix.
The bass was re-amped too. I felt the amp-mic sound lacked body and retracked the DI signal through the studio’s SWR 15″ speaker combo. It was recorded with an Rode NT1.
Before re-amping I compressed and EQ’d the DI signal to get the best out of the re-recording.
The guitars were mostly eq-ed to remove some cymbal bleed in the mic and compressed to get more push. It was also sidechain compressed to give some room to the low end of the snare and keep the fullness.
In the drum mix the bassdrum and snare were compressed with the dbx 160a compressor for snap and push. The vst tape emulation Magneto was used to get some tape-like saturation and compression on snare, toms and kick. The panning of the drums is from the drummer’s perspective in this mix: hihat to the left and the ride and floortom to the right.
No room mics were used in this session, the little bleed in the guitar mics and the overheads provided enough spaceyness.
One thing about the intro: this is part of the demorecording the band made with the built in mic of an ipad they sent me. We thought it was a fun and cool intro and it worked out really well.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
