Stark Demo 2015 – Recording Session

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5596″ border_color=”grey” img_link_large=”yes” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Stark visited the studio to record their 2015 demo.
The recording was done together with Freek Philippi, who also did a great job mixing and mastering the recordings. Listen to the endresult in the player above.
This blog is about the recording process.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]The recording was planned to be somewhere in between everything recorded at once and overdubbing parts.
We agreed on recording the drums, bass and first guitar part at the same time, in the same room. Vocals and second guitar part are overdubbed.
With this approach, you will have a little bleed in the mics but works very well. Just check out the Rise Above recordings done in the White Noise Studio.
We made sure the bass amp was exactly in front of the snare and bassdrum to keep the spill from the bassguitar in the center of the stereo image. The guitarstack was placed to the right and in the overdub the guitar was panned to the left.

Mics:

We set out to use a combination of my mics and Freek’s microphones.
For drums these are Sennhesier MD421-2 on toms, AKG D1000c on bottom snare, Shure beta 57 on top snare, AKG D112 in front of the bassdrum, RØDE nt5’s for ride and hihat.
For overheads we used a RØDE NT1 and Neumann TLM103. These are not matched of course, but worked very well. The RØDE sounded more gritty, the TLM103 more polished.
Inside the kickdrum, we first used a md421 but that mic broke down after an hour. We swapped it for an Shure sm58, to capture the attack. That worked very well.

The guitar was miced with an shure sm57 through an api 512C preamp.

The bassguitar was miced with DI out, sennheiser e602 and AKG C1000.

Vocals are all recorded with an sm58. We did this to make sure the live energie was kept in tact and that worked out very well. ( Freek’s suggestion)

Freek also did a brilliant job on the mix, as you can hear in the audio tracks above.
