Creating your own delay and reverb with nothing
more than a couple of microphones and a sound source.

So creating an unique delay and reverb with nothing more than a couple of microphones and your own soundsource.

How does that work?

 Well, it has to do with the speed of sound. Sound travels pretty slowly, around 343m/s or 1125 ft/s.
 And if you have a soundsource and a microphone at a certain distance you will have a delay before the sound travels from the speaker to the microphone.
With that in mind you know how further away you put the microphone from the soundsource,
how bigger the delay will be.

I will explain a technique with four microphones.
This technique places the microphones about four meters which will translate into 12ms between each microphone.
When you move them closer together you create a reverb.
When you move them further apart you get a multitap delay.

If you don’t have multiple microphones, don’t worry, you can do this with 1 microphone.
First thing you have to do is to reamp the sounds you want to delay, so you play a sound in your DAW,
play through a speaker and record that sound with a microphone.

You place that microphone a few meters away from the speaker to create that first delay.
That will be your first tap of the multitap delay.
To create the second tap of the multitap delay you place that same microphone a few meters further away or in a corner or somewhere else.
Then you record it again. You can do that with a third tap, a fourth tap or how many you need.
And in this way you can create with one microphone instead of using four at the same time.
It’s an easy and fun technique which will definitely add a unique touch on delays and reverbs.

And that sound will be unique to your room only, so you could call it a ”signature” sound.
